F.C. Gundlach
You'll Never Watch Alone

8.5. — 16.8.2026

From May 2026, the Bucerius Kunst Forum will present the exhibition F.C. Gundlach. You’ll Never Watch Alone. As part of the 9th Triennale of Photography Hamburg 2026, the show focuses on the multifaceted work of F.C. Gundlach (1926-2021) – the photographer, gallery owner, collector, entrepreneur and networker.

From 8 May to 16 August 2026, you can explore over 200 exhibits – ranging from iconic magazine covers and unpublished black-and-white as well as colour shots to works by Gundlach’s role models, contemporaries and successors such as Richard Avedon, Erwin Blumenfeld, Regina Relang, Cindy Sherman and many others. In conversation with Gundlach’s own images, these pieces equally expose the love for the medium, mutual influences, societal discourses, and power dynamics. The exhibition is the first major presentation of Gundlach’s oeuvre since his death in 2021 and simultaneously celebrates his 100th birthday with special loans from the F.C. Gundlach Foundation.

As a fashion photographer from the 1950s onward, F.C. Gundlach helped shape the image of fashion and the related notions of trends, identity, and gender in both German and international magazines. At the same time, he forged creative networks between Paris, New York, and Tokyo. The exhibition demonstrates how Gundlach was constantly inspired to experiment with new stylistic forms, his curiosity about the global photographic discourse which in in this way, set new standards for the visual culture of his era. Whether in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, or Berlin, his role as gallery owner, laboratory proprietor, and collector – as well as his commitment to supporting the emerging photography scene and nurturing new talents – was crucial in establishing a vibrant photographic culture that continues to resonate today. By presenting Gundlach’s multifaceted oeuvre, the show traces both the continuities and the ruptures in his personal trajectory and the broader photocultural developments of his time.

Alongside his celebrated, iconic photographs, the exhibition features previously unpublished fashion series, experimental works and recent discoveries from Gundlach’s own archive and that of his contemporaries. It reveals how deeply photography is interwoven with cultural and social developments and highlights the pioneering influence of Gundlach’s vision on today’s visual culture. By spotlighting defining phases of his life, the show offers fresh perspectives on his artistic legacy and on the emergence of the 20th-century photo-cultural scene.
