In the sense of our founder

Freedom of opinion and a free press in the countries of Eastern Europe were already of great concern to our founder Gerd Bucerius. Since its establishment, the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius has promoted the exchange of German and Eastern European journalists. Since 2000, it has awarded the Young Press of Eastern Europe Prize, renamed the Free Media Awards in 2016, to media professionals who do not give up and report independently despite difficult conditions and threats. The ZEIT-Stiftung has also sponsored numerous academics from Ukraine and throughout Eastern Europe.

The ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius supports the development of civil society. The independent non-profit foundation aims to promote knowledge, enrich culture and strengthen competencies. Its flagships are the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, founded in 2000, and the Bucerius Kunst Forum, established in 2002.
