Pictures at an Exhibition

In our new video series conceived by Andreas Hoffmann and Alexander Krichel - inspired by Mussorgsky's piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition - we are pleased to invite you to experience the exhibition Georges Braque. Dance of Shapes in a special way. Together with pianist and ECHO Klassik award winner Alexander Krichel, we approach the artworks of the French painter musically and experience three encounters between Braque's paintings and thematically related compositions by his contemporaries, which the pianist contrasts with the artworks.

The Promenade of the piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky from 1847 is the musical and thematical opener of our acoustic exhibition tour. The Russian composer takes his listeners on an acoustic promenade through the memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by his deceased friend Viktor Hartmann.

Andreas Hoffmann, Managing Director of the Bucerius Kunst Forum, will provide an intruduction to the idea and concept of the video series, as well as to the selection of the individual compositions and their music-historical context. Our artistic director Kathrin Baumstark will then present individual artworks by Braque. Afterwards, Alexander Krichel will take you on a musical tour on the piano and interpret famous compositions by Mussorgsky, Ravel and Rachmaninoff. They will be played on a Steinway grand piano from 1908, completely overhauled and restored at Klangmanufaktur Hamburg.
