This exhibition brings together four personalities who – each in their own way – shaped visual culture in the USA. And yet their works are hardly ever exhibited together. This has to do with the traditionally European, but rather un-American, differentiation between high art on the one hand versus the commercial culture industry on the other. By comparing and contrasting these four iconic positions, the show addresses this characteristic difference in the concept of art on either side of the Atlantic, a distinction that is often overlooked.

The exhibition is funded by ExxonMobil, Bankhaus Lampe and Lampe Asset Management.
